In twenty five years I have never purchased a lens other than a Nikkor, but after hearing and reading what claims were being made about the sharpness and corner to corner quality of this lens, I went for it, and I am a beleiver. This is the sharpest piece of glass since the 105mm 2.5 Nikkor! This will make a wonderful portrait lens for any DSLR owner, not to mention it’s ability to go even slightly closer than 1:1 magnification. The only thing that is not perfect is the slightly confused AF ability, it tends to sometimes search for the subject by focusing in the wrong direction, this is fixed by simply reapplying your shutter finger and then it searches in the correct direction. I highly recommend this lens.

This is a really nice lense. It got great reviews, so I figured I would give it a try. It has a great macro feature and I am very pleased with the optics. I am a hard core Nikon fan, so I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. It’s the perfect substitute for the old Nikkor 105mm f 2.8. I used that for portraits for years and it’s a great option to have in the bag.

I have had the Sigma 70mm F2.8 Macro since January 08 and have taken over a thousand images with it. This lens is super sharp. I personally like the 70mm focal lenth, this may vary with different photographers but I like to get really close to the subjects I photograph so you will have to think about that before you buy. Popular Photography Magazine stated “in practical terms this lens is faultless” and I agree. It’s super sharp, the autofocus may hunt a little but this is a common problem with almost all macro lenses. It has a focus limiter switch that comes in handy to prevent the hunting. I can not say enough about this lens, it’s not the cheapest lens but it may be the best for the money. The build quality is excellent and it looks really good on my camera. It also makes a great portrait lens with perfect bokah. I just love this lens and you will to if you buy it.

I got this lens mainly for shooting artwork for a documentation project, although I expect I will end up using it for a lot more. It may be the sharpest lens I have. The autofocus worked great, and I had no problems with the focus seeking at distances of 2 to 6 feet. I did learn right away that the depth of field is very shallow unless it is cranked down quite a bit, so I switched to manual and set the f stop and shutter speed myself, but I think the D90 can focus about as well as I can so I let it take care of that. The bokeh is indeed very nice. I highly recommend this lens.
